Baum is another American artist whose work resembles Roesen’s. American Still Life has a marble table piled high with an extravagance of fruit. There is also a bird’s nest. The picture is especially full of round fruit – hardly anything is elongated. Even the bunches of grapes make the grapes look fairly rounded, although still oblong. Most of the fruits in the picture are small, on the order of cherries. An orange looks positively huge. Baum also likes reddish fruits.
The center left image is a detail from an anti catholic propaganda print Faiths Victorie in Romes Crueltie (top; published by Thomas Jenner, c. 1630), which shows the burning by his foes at the stake. The bottom left image is a +135° rotated detail from Henry Holiday’s illustration (right side) to the final chapter The Vanishing in Lewis Carroll’s The Hunting of the Snark (published in the year 1876).
This is one of the reasons why I believe that the “vanishing” of the hero in Lewis Carroll’s and Henry Holiday’s The Hunting of the Snark is an allusion to the burning of Thomas Cranmer.

M. C. Escher’s art never really exited me. But it inspired many artists. As a kind of bycatch of my Snark hunt, I found that also Escher himself was open to inspiration from other artists.

Beim Betrachten von Bildern haben wir die Wahl, was wir sehen wollen. Das gilt auch für Salvatore Dalís mit der “paranoisch-kritische Methode” im Jahr 1958 variierte “Spitzenklöpplerin” von Johannes Vermeer. Dalí schreibt dazu über Rhinozeroshörner, logarithmische Spiralen usw. Der Betrachter hat nun die Wahl, sich tiefernst veralbern zu lassen oder Dalís mit Beschuss duch Nägel entstandene und mit der Kaltnadel nachbearbeiteten Radierung einfach einmal spiegelverkehrt zu betrachten. (Das sollte man auch bei anderen Künstlern öfters machen.) Darum habe ich Dalís “Spitzenklöpplerin” (auf der rechten Seite) einfach einmal seitenverkehrt widergegeben. Hat das bisher denn wirklich noch niemand gamacht?
Heute (2013-09-15) wird in Bayern nicht nur die CSU wiedergewählt, sondern es ist leider auch der letzte Tag einer sehr sehenswerten Dalí-Ausstellung im Münchener Künstlerhaus am Stachus. Schmelzende Uhren gibt es da auch, aber sie sind in der Minderheit. Unter den von Richard H. Mayer (Kunstgalerie Böttingerhaus Bamberg) bereitgestellten Objekten fand ich auch diese “Spitzenklöpplerin”. Der kleine und hübsche Katalog reicht Dalís Nonsens-Kommentar ganz ernsthaft an den Ausstellungsbesucher durch, ohne die Seitenverkehrung zu verraten. Bei einer Radierung muss sich der Künstler ja auch nicht allzusehr anstrengen, um eine Vorlage zu spiegeln.
